THE CAPITOLINE MUSEUMS
The Capitoline Museums stand on the magnificent Piazza del Campidoglio, designed by Michelangelo in the 16th century, atop the hill that served as the religious and political heart of ancient Rome. Widely regarded as the world’s oldest public museum, they were founded in 1471 when Pope Sixtus IV donated a remarkable collection of bronze statues to the people of Rome, a collection that was later expanded by successive popes.

The museum route extends through the Palazzo dei Conservatori and the Palazzo Nuovo, connected by the fascinating Lapidary Gallery. Among its most celebrated masterpieces are the Capitoline Wolf, the monumental equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, the colossal fragments of the Statue of Constantine, the elegant Capitoline Venus, the Capitoline Gaul, and an extraordinary collection of Roman sculptures, frescoes, mosaics, and archaeological artifacts that tell the fascinating story of the Eternal City.
