Private Vatican Museums Tour Itinerary

Unless otherwise requested by the client, or in the event of extraordinary closures ordered by the Vatican Museums Directorate, the following is the suggested itinerary for this private tour, lasting approximately 3 hours.

The visit begins in the Pinecone Courtyard (Cortile della Pigna), named after the monumental ancient Roman bronze pinecone that once decorated the fountain of the Baths of Agrippa.

The tour then continues to the Belvedere Courtyard (Cortile del Belvedere), where the Greco-Roman section of the Vatican Museums begins. Here you will admire some of the finest masterpieces of classical sculpture, including the famous Laocoön Group and the Apollo Belvedere, regarded as one of the greatest achievements of ancient sculpture.

The itinerary continues to the Hall of the Muses, home to the celebrated Belvedere Torso, one of the sculptures that most inspired Michelangelo in the creation of his masterpieces, including the Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel.

The visit proceeds to the Round Room (Sala Rotonda), where you can admire the monumental Porphyry Basin from Nero’s Domus Aurea, together with remarkable ancient sculptures. The tour then reaches the Hall of the Greek Cross (Sala a Croce Greca), which houses the magnificent porphyry sarcophagi of Saint Constance and Saint Helena, daughter and mother of Emperor Constantine the Great.

Ascending to the upper floor, you will walk through three of the Vatican Museums’ most spectacular galleries: the Gallery of the Candelabra, the Gallery of the Tapestries, displaying magnificent Flemish tapestries woven from designs by Raphael’s workshop, and the extraordinary Gallery of Maps, stretching for more than 120 metres and decorated with the earliest large-scale maps of the Italian regions. Its windows also offer beautiful views over the Vatican Gardens.

Before reaching the Raphael Rooms, the route passes through the Sobieski Room and the Room of the Immaculate Conception.

The highlight of the tour is the magnificent Raphael Rooms, the papal apartments commissioned by Pope Julius II and decorated by Raphael and his workshop. During the visit you will explore the Room of the Signature (Stanza della Segnatura), home to the world-famous School of Athens, the Room of Heliodorus, the Room of the Fire in the Borgo, and the Hall of Constantine, completed by Raphael’s pupils following the master’s original designs.

The tour concludes in the breathtaking Sistine Chapel. As complete silence is required inside the chapel, your guide will provide a comprehensive explanation before entering, using the official illustrated panels located outside. Visitors will then have time to admire this extraordinary masterpiece independently.

Built during the 15th century and decorated by renowned artists such as Botticelli, Perugino, and Ghirlandaio, the Sistine Chapel is world-famous above all for Michelangelo’s extraordinary frescoes, including the magnificent ceiling illustrating scenes from the Book of Genesis, among them the iconic Creation of Adam, and the monumental Last Judgment on the altar wall.
