THE PONTIFICAL RESIDENCES OF CASTEL GANDOLFO
The Pontifical Villas of Castel Gandolfo are the place used as the summer residences of the pontiffs. The Pontifical Villas cover an area of 55 hectares and are located in the Castelli Romani area, in the province of Rome, and their origins are very ancient: the oldest nucleus dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was owned by a rich Ligurian family, the Gandolfi. However, it was only in the 17th century that the castle took on the role for which it is known today. Pope Urban VIII was in fact the first pope to decide to spend the summer months here and to decide to expand the structure: he built a new wing facing the lake and the garden behind it, which visitors can see in its original form, as it has not undergone any changes since then. Inside the residence, among other things, we find an astronomical observatory, called La Specola Vaticana, and Villa Cybo, whose building was designed by the architect Francesco Fontana. In addition to these: Villa Barberini, the Propaganda Fide Summer College, a former convent of the Friars Minor, and the convent of the Poor Clares of Albano.
