Tour Itinerary: Caracalla, Circus Maximus and Bocca della Verità
Our 3-hour tour starts from the Baths of Caracalla. We will visit the interior of the Baths desired by Septimius Severus and his son Caracalla, making an exciting dive into the past. It is said that the enormous thermal apparatus covered more tahn one hundred thousand square meters and could contain up to ten thousand people. This gorgeous complex was built by the Roman emperor to show his power to the Romans and to foreign people.
The construction of some of those megalithic buildings also leads back to the emperor Vespasian, who also built the Colosseum and the emperor Trajan, which commissioned the construction of the Basilica Ulpa. The primary purpose of the Baths was the pleasure of Roman wealthiest classes, who loved to spend the whole day in the most total idleness.
The visit inside Caracalla Baths lasts about one hour and 30 minutes. After Caracalla, the tour continues walking to the Circus Maximus. This great Stadium is located between the Palatine and the Aventino hills, occupying a huge surface (600 x 140 metres).
The Circus Maximus was built in the antiquity for horse rides. The legends tells that right in this location, the mithical episode of the Rat of Sabines took place. The tour ends in Bocca della Verità Square.
The square owes its name to the big round stone representing the head of a screaming faun. This strange and impressive stone was employed in the Medioeval Age during criminal trials. At the end of the trial, the suspect was obliged to enter his arm inside the month of the faun. If the criminal suspect was juged guilty, his arm would have been amputated!
In Bocca della Verità Square, there are also some important historic buildings worth to be seen: Santa Maria in Cosmedin church and Hercules and Portunus temples.
